I didn't know anything about this genius-Bert Simons, who has created some very unusual sculptures using a 3d modeling program. It's really stunning what he does. Ah, will the wonders of technology never cease. So bizarre but utterly fascinating, if not the least little bit disturbing.

Hello, i know this is going to sound a little odd, but in my sculpture class we are doing a project on sculptors, and well, i was assigned you. Well what we have to do is some research on background info on our artists and well, i can hardly find any info. What i need to know is.... basically When you were born, Where your from, the Materials you use (but thats obvious, by the way i find your art incredible how the paper represents each and every facial feature and bone in the face.)and the methods you use. Thank you so much, I highly appreciate it.:)

  • Mao Zedong (W.I.P): texturizing by Mattia
Hi! First of all, Happy new Year! About Mao, I know that recently is on the market a photographic book. Ok, is a book over the theme of the gadgeds about Mao, but maybe you can find some cool photos and inspirations. http://www.eyrolles.com/Loisirs/Livre/le-mao-9782812600425 An other idea can be to do a golden paper sculpure starting from the metal bust: use the details from the scan and color from photo of the little metal bust. Something like a metal/paper Mao. What do you think? Best, Mattia

Bye. I'm from Lima-Perú
Bert: Ola Juan, Las he hecho mi mismo, y porque es muchu trabajo no es un productu commercial crea, todavia faltan 150 horas crear uno..

Your work is amazing. Really. I am willing to se a complete body or a white face and so on. I have an Art degree and I am soon to obtain my title as Architect too. I would really enjoy helping you to develop new models, if you are in lack of time or if you have a bigger project. Anyway, thanks a lot for the tips you give in order to do this, I can not wait to begin experimenting with this. And congratulations for the publication (long time ago yet) in the Tactile book (from there I reached you). One last thing, just to repeat what many people say in the comments, this IS art today. And very nice. regards, azbe

Bert Clone #5 is still in good shape. He serves to keep the cats off the corner stereo speaker. I offer advice for future builders of the Bert clone: watch the print scaling to be sure all pages are printed in the same scale. With different international paper size standards, auto-scaling of prints could cause problems on assembly. Thanks again, and keep up the good work on Rozemarijn and Mao!
  • laserscan: Image12.med by David M.
Haven't you heard of Strata Foto 3D?
Yes I have checked that out, but automated packages like these don give me the full control that I need. They end up with to dense meshes which in terms of shape is good but hard to reduce to a low poly mesh without loosing shape information again. And since I need a low poly mesh I like to make that by hand.

Hi Bert, I meant to say at the end of my last comment if you had thought about using the same techniques and processes to create complete people and maybe even have them in different positions as if they have had a 3-d photo taken. Sorry to have bothered you again.
Hi Stuart.. if you take in account that only making a head takes me about 120 hours to make then youĺl understand why I didn´t make a full body clone yet..
  • Anatomy head (2005): 10_fotocollage_3 by Stuart Christie
Hi Bert, I think your work is brilliant. Keep up the good work. Got a suggestion for you. Have you ever thought about approaching music bands? The flattened out complted collage would make a very good record/cd sleeve. But I also think another good way of showing your could be making prints of the band memebers that would be put inside the record sleeve and enable the purchaser to have 3-d paper models of the band. I'm not sure if that suggestion would take you in the wrong direction where it comes to getting your'e work noticed or recognised even more or if you would possibly see it as being too much of a gimmick and not what you would like see being done to help promote you're work. I apologise if this suggestion is not suitable or if you have already thought or carried out this idea. PS...

It reminds me of the statues I see in the Greek books. YOu know the ones with the gods after thousands of years. Which reminds me I wonder how this would look years from now. IF the sculpture is taken care of. How long would a paper statue/sculpture such as this last?
  • cardboard cutie (2006): doll1 by MinStoda
I love the detail... & yes realDoll is way to espensive. Even though I wanted one myself. I love your work. I have never seen anything like it. I would love to hang my friends up on the wall. Being that I am a 24 hr Nurse ITs hard to see my friends. SO that would be so cool. Also how were you able to position her body on the ground? I know she is make of paper, but was her part already designed for her to lay down? I know that sounds silly. But I will pass this site on to all my friends.. Continue the wonderful work. Showing much love...

Congratulations with this excellent concept, it is amazing what paper can do, who needs holograms! I was involved with a project years ago which created art structures using similar tools, rolls of paper and air blowers. With the right software behind it (in the same way people create their personal avatars for 2nd life or quake etc), I can recall using such software years ago for mapping photos to surfaces. Every home could have paper clones, a stunning, all be it slightly eerie, family portrait. Even as pure art it has definite level of realism which traditional art fails to produce when faced with the HD photo realistic gaming era we live in. Genuine modern art! Tim

I find your head and description extremely poignant. I do not normally comment on things I see on the web but I shall remember the honesty of your words. The technicality of your head is incidental to me. I see alot of things that are supposed to be art, and this is art even if it does not claim to be, it is a receptacle for emotion. If you were to make this work available to an art appreciative audience you may well be remembered. I tried to understand the emotion that people claim they can see in Van Gogh, I can't, but I can see it in your head.
